Why do we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows? The Ethics of our Relationship to Animals...

Are all animals equal? Why do we treat some with more reverence than others? Are we obliged to speak up for the rights of animals when they don't have a voice?

Our investigation into the ethics of our relationship with animals will involve a workshop on pet ownership with The Lost Dogs Home, a visit to a local butcher and a session with activists from Animals Australia. You will also have the opportunity to debate the issues amongst yourselves & check out local opinions in the community through surveying.

The Ethics of Capitalism:

Do we agree with the current economic situation in the world? The rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Do we have a duty to help those less fortunate or is it every person for themselves? These are the questions we want to answer throughout the day.

We'll be visiting the socialist party leader on lygon street for a different perspective on the how the economy should work.

We'll do some surveying and observation in the CBD and we'll also go to Conscious Capitalism; a company which thinks there is more to business than making profits.

If you are interested to learn how the economy works, then this is the trail for you

Ethics of Food & the choices we make.

Did you know there is a growing interest in the ethics of food consumption when eating out? Well there are a number of cafes & bars in Melbourne that are now making ethical choices in various ways when it comes to dining out. So as a consumer with money to spend on food and drinks you can choose where your money goes that makes a difference in someone's life either here in Australia or overseas. Want to know how? Join me on Wednesday as we visit Friends of the Earth in Fitzroy & then wander through the city exploring the cafes & bars that are making a positive difference with their business. You will also be asking people if they are concerned with where their money goes when they eat out.

Ethical traveling, Ethical eating

(NB - If you are coming on this trail you need to meet John at 8.45 at Flinders Street Station - under the clocks)

Question 1. What damage are cars doing to the planet?

If you want to discuss more ethical ways of getting around we'll be going to Prahran to meet Carnextdoor.com.au - a company helping people share their cars so we don't clog up our streets with excess vehicles.

We'll also go to Melbourne Uni to meet professor John Stone - expert on traffic systems for the future.

Question 2. Is it ethical to throw away food? To answer this question we'll visit a food recycling building in the CBD to view an innovative way to reusing food in an ethical way.

Why do we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows?

This trail asks us to explore our relationships to animals - why are some things considered acceptable and others not?

We will visit a leather goods store in the CBD, a vegan shoe store in Collingwood and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Parkville. You will have the opportunity to practice your surveying skills at Melbourne University.

Hopefully this trail will challenge you to examine your own ethical standpoints in relation to how we use animals in our everyday lives.

Be ready to ask and answer some big questions!!

The ethics of how we live and what we eat

Do you ever wonder
abou
t the impact we have on the planet in our everyday lives, namely our consumer choices? Have you ever considered an alternative way of living
in community? How about the food you eat, where does it come from, is it produced in an ethical way, do these things concern you?
This trail is going to take us on an exploration of ethical ways of living
and see first hand alternative lifestyle choices.
We will start our trail at school then together we will travel to Friends of the Earth in Smith St, Collingwood where we will meet Nick Ray from Ethical Consumer Group. From here we will travel to Murundaka in Heidelberg Heights to see & learn about co-housing communities and being a conscious cook. Giselle Wilkinson will be our host here.

Trail Options:

Ethical Issue: Homelessness

We have all experienced this ethical dilemma; A person asks you for money and you have a choice: Stop and give or walk on by.

How strong should our commitment to homelessness be? Is it our responsibility to help our fellow citizens who are experiencing homelessness or does paying taxes mean that it isn't our responsibility anymore?

We'll be in North Melbourne and the CBD for the whole day.

Students who chose learning goals such as Global issues, empathy, social justice etc. would be suited to this trail.

Food - the Final Frontier?

This week we will explore how food & food waste lies at the heart of ethical dilemmas regarding equality, sustainability and consumption. For those of you who love food - growing it, cooking it & eating it - it will be an opportunity to see how food can spring in to action when we try to create an ethical community.

We will be doing a preserving workshop with the Flavour Exchange at the Atherton Gardens Community Kitchen before sharing what we have created with St Mary's House of Welcome, one of Fitzroy's most loved community centres. The day will end with you investigating how Fitzroy's cafes and grocery stores deal with food waste.

It will be a great opportunity to learn preserving skills while contributing to the social fabric of Fitzroy & developing insight into how we can tackle the ethical dilemmas surrounding the sustainability & accessibility of food.

The ethics of what we eat

Do you love food? Do you sometimes wonder where your food comes from? Do you love animals? Are you vegetarian or vegan? Have you ever considered being vegetarian/vegan?

If these are some ethical questions that interest you then Wednesday's ethics investigative trail may be the one for you. We will be pondering the ideas of the well being of animals, the planet and YOU.

We will be visiting an Organic Butcher, Lentil As Anything and Woolworths.

Join us in a day of exploring the Ethics of Food.

Ethics in Our City
This trail will provide us with the chance to explore some of the ethical issues in our everyday life. We'll be opening a few doors, peeking inside, and hopefully lighting a few (metaphorical) lightbulbs!
Firstly we'll look at the ethics of what we buy. Did you know that your everyday purchasing decisions were ethical ones?
After that, we'll head to St. Paul's Cathedral to investigate whether God is needed to live an ethical life.
Finally, we'll head to the North Melbourne Lost Dogs Home to discuss our ethical obligations to our animal companions.
Covering some ground in more ways than one!

Meat is Murder

Any fans of "The Smiths" will enjoy this title!
Lots of us eat meat but don't bother taking the time to question the ethics behind our decision. (I am included in this)
This trail will take place in the suburb of Collingwood and will visit two vegetarian restaurants who will help us to refine our thinking towards livestock and to understand how the meat industry works.
We will finally finish with a visit to Woolworths and a tour of the meat and poultry section.
This trail will hopefully be confronting and will challenge our opinions towards Vegetarians, Vegans and most importantly, animals in general.
